A lawyer representing Donald Trump in his criminal trial in Manhattan spent more than two hours today attempting to undermine the credibility of one of the prosecution’s most high-profile witnesses. “You made all this up, right?” the lawyer, Susan Necheles, asked Stormy Daniels, whose account of a sexual encounter with Trump spurred the hush-money agreement at the heart of the charges against the former president. Daniels responded with a forceful “No.”Daniels’s two days of testimony, which concluded this afternoon, was in all likelihood the most dramatic chapter of the first criminal trial of an American president. CNN —A US Air Force rescue team airlifted a civilian passenger needing urgent medical care this past weekend from a Carnival cruise ship that was hundreds of miles out in open Atlantic waters. The dramatic May 4 medical rescue involved three helicopter air-to-air refuelings to reach the Carnival Venezia, according to a news release from the 920th Rescue Wing. The mission was carried out by two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and two teams of rescuers. When the aircraft arrived, rescuers were hoisted down from the helicopters and began preparing the patient for transport, the release said. Neither the 920th Rescue Wing nor the cruise line had further information about the patient’s condition or where he was taken for treatment.

CNN —Some Ukrainian prisoners will be able to apply for early parole and join the army under a new law aimed at boosting Kyiv’s manpower in its fight against the Russian invasion. The new law requires that convicts join the military of their own free will. Those who leave the military before their contract is up face additional prison terms of between five and 10 years. Shuliak said those released on parole to serve would have the status of “military personnel,” and therefore be subject to the same restrictions governing their behaviour. Contracts can be terminated in some circumstances, such as ill health or if the former prisoner commits a new crime.
